The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is recruiting for the position of Learning Manager: Africa Activation, which offers an exciting opportunity to engage the Higher Education sector across Africa in all aspects of the circular economy.

About the Position 

In this position, you will be reporting to their Education Lead, and you will work in partnership with a leading African university, supporting key academics in embedding the circular economy across its teaching disciplines as well as developing a research programme to support a better understanding of circular economy activities across Africa.

A key part of this role will also be to support the African university in their ambitions to develop student enterprise and transform activities on campus to provide demonstration projects to showcase the circular economy. As well as these outputs, the university has ambitions to lead the agenda in Higher Education across the continent and share the work of the Foundation as well as bringing insight on the circular economy in Africa to the Foundation’s global audience. This is a fixed term contract for 2 years (ends December 2022)

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Supporting the lead University in developing their circular economy action plan and programme over a two-year period, bringing knowledge and expertise from the Foundation to strengthen the programme and outcomes.
  • Keeping abreast of wider developments in circular economy application and teaching globally through our established global Higher Education community.
  • Making appropriate links between the lead University and wider Foundation programmes and network activities
  • Facilitating the University’s engagement across the Foundation’s wider network by identifying appropriate and relevant engagement opportunities.
  • Lead the programme of work to support staff capacity building at the University and support the use of the Foundation’s content and materials to develop new teaching offerings.
  • Leading the development of a bespoke From Linear to Circular Africa programme, utilising Foundation expertise and identifying appropriate African-related content working closely with the lead University. This will include building the relevant networks or engaging with already established networks across the continent to build appetite and support for the programme.
  • To work alongside the Schools and Colleges Manager (UK based) to develop a bespoke Africa teen webinar series and building appropriate networks of schools across the continent to ensure maximum reach is achieved.
  • Identifying appropriate content to share and showcase to the wider global audience
  • Building appropriate networks and contacts across a wide range of African universities and working alongside the Higher Education Network Manager to profile universities as appropriate.
  • Support the wider education and learning team as appropriate across a range of programmes.

Duration

  • This is a fixed-term contract for 2 years (ends December 2022)
  • Work Location: Cowes, Isle of Wight with the possibility of initial remote working due to the current COVID-19 restrictions.

Eligibility

  • No specific degree qualifications are required, but suitable career experience is most relevant for this role. Studies in a circular economy or Higher Education related field would be preferable.
  • Previous relationship and network management experience is essential together with evidence of negotiating and facilitating relationships to deliver shared outcomes across a range of organisations
  • Experience of working with or within Higher Education is preferred, but not essential.
  • Excellent written and spoken English is a prerequisite. Further languages appropriate to the African continent would be an advantage.
  • Understanding of the circular economy framework and / or the ability and desire to develop knowledge of the circular economy framework in order to ensure the clear communication of our key messages.
  • Knowledge of Africa and its unique global challenges is essential as well as the ability to develop knowledge and understanding of circular economy across the continent.
  • Evidence of strong ICT skills with the ability to learn new systems and processes quickly.
