The UCL Institute for Environmental Design & Engineering (UCL IEDE) is seeking a post-doctoral research fellow/senior fellow to take part in a new Wellcome Trust funded project named HEROIC (Health and Economic impacts of Reducing Overheating in Cities). The project is funded for a period of 3 years from September 2020, and is led by UCL, with partners at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Exeter University, as well as international collaborators.
About the Position
The UCL Institute for Environmental Design & Engineering (UCL IEDE) delivers world-leading research, teaching and enterprise towards a goal of making our buildings, towns and cities better places in which to live, with a focus on health, human well-being, productivity, energy use and climate change. This is an exciting opportunity to engage with experts from multiple fields in an inter-disciplinary project which aims to assess the effects of climate and environmental change on health, and explore the most effective ways to minimise harmful effects for the most vulnerable population groups.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The successful candidate will collect and analyze secondary environmental, social, and demographic data using geographical, statistical, and spatial analysis tools such as GIS.
- The post holder will work closely with team members across the project, to combine data produced within the environmental modelling work package with external data, and provide input to the health impact, health economic, and decision-making work packages.
- They will carry out quantitative analysis to investigate health impacts relating to a range of factors within cities in different climatic and income settings, and the potential impacts of urban heat island mitigation strategies on health.
Duration of this post is available from 1st January 2021 and is funded until 31st August 2023 in the first instance.
Eligibility
- The ideal candidate is a highly quantitative and analytical person with a PhD or equivalent experience in geography, environmental, or atmospheric sciences or a related quantitative field, and a keen interest in multi-disciplinary research.
- They should have experience in using large geographical and environmental datasets. An appreciation of the field of urban environmental health and social determinants of health would be an advantage.
