The Helmholtz Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training in Energy and Climate (HITEC) is currently recruiting postgraduate students for doctoral fellowship in the challenging fields of energy and climate research for 2020/2021.

About the PhD Programme 

HITEC is a joint initiative between Forschungszentrum Jülich, the RWTH Aachen University, the Ruhr-University Bochum, the University of Cologne, the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, and the University of Wuppertal. Its faculty members, scientists and engineers, are leading experts in their fields.

HITEC is committed to scientific excellence, to an interdisciplinary and international research environment, to an accepting learning environment which embraces diversity, and aims to turn the PhD students into well needed experts for academia and industry.
HITEC offers a 3-year training programme which accompanies the doctoral thesis: students can select from a variety of HITEC events, including lectures on topics or methods, hands-on training courses in the lab or professional skills training, such as scientific writing or presenting.

They are seeking highly qualified and motivated scientists and engineers for doctoral studies in energy and climate research, specifically in in the fields of: materials science, energy conversion, photovoltaics, modeling, numerical simulations, electronics, electrical and mechanical engineering, analytics, atmospheric physics and chemistry.

For the application, candidates can choose from 13 projects and 6 research fields. The project ideas and working packages are outlined in the project descriptions. For each project the specific requirements are indicated.

*In total, up to 6 positions are available as HITEC Fellows.

Eligibility

  • They are seeking highly qualified and motivated scientists and engineers. Applicants are expected to hold a M.Sc. (Master’s) or equivalent degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Meteorology, Mathematics, Engineering or related sciences, including a written masters research thesis. Specific requirements are indicated for each project.
  • It is not mandatory that you have completed your degree by the time you submit your application. However, the expected date of your final exam should not be later than June/July 2021.
  • The integration in national and international co-operations requires the willingness to cooperate in teams. Hence, they expect that you are able to communicate your results in oral and written form in very good English.

Selection

After closing of the call the applications will be reviewed. Only complete applications will be considered. The best candidates will be invited to an online selection week to work out the details of the project with the research group which hosts the project. The selection week will take place in spring 2021. Successful candidates will receive an email notification about the admission and invitation end of January 2021. The task during this one week is to jointly work on the project idea with the group members and your supervisor to turn it into an outstanding and convincing PhD project. On the last day of this week the candidates will present their projects to the members of the HITEC Advisory Board. The six best candidates will be nominated for a HITEC fellowship.
