UN COP26 Host City Volunteers in Glasgow [For UK Residents]

As part of COP26, Glasgow City Council is looking to enlist the help of friendly, outgoing, and enthusiastic volunteers to contribute to the success of this momentous event.

About the Volunteer Programme

As a COP26 Volunteer, you will play your role representing Glasgow and the UK to delegates from around the world. You will provide key information on the conference and conference venues, advice on how to move around the city and promote the best of what Glasgow has to offer. COP26 Volunteers will provide Glasgow’s world-famous warm welcome to ensure that delegates and visitors have the best possible experience, playing a crucial role in the success of an important global event.

WHERE AND WHEN: Volunteers will interact with delegates in and around Glasgow city centre, along the main walking routes to the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), at key transport and accommodation hubs and also at key locations in Edinburgh.

Volunteers will undertake shifts during the period 28 October – 14 November and must be available during this period. Volunteers should expect to undertake around six shifts during this time and will be invited to attend training ahead of these dates

Duties and Responsibilities

Accommodation Hub Team Member

Accommodation Hub volunteers will be the first point of contact for the delegates in their dedicated hotels.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Giving information on the conference schedule, transport and local amenities to delegates
• Identifying and dealing with any accommodation specific issues with the accommodation manager
• Making the delegate experience memorable

Active Travel Route Team Member

Based at various points around Glasgow, Active Travel Route volunteers will use their local knowledge and warm Glasgow welcome to assist attendees of COP26 around the city.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Provide excellent customer service to delegates and members of the public
• Man information points on travel routes
• Provide ways of finding services to attendees

Green Zone Team Member

Green Zone Team Members will be at the heart of the community activities for COP26, welcoming delegates and members of the public to events at the Glasgow Science Centre.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Providing a warm welcome to delegates and members of the public to the Green Zone and supporting attendees to register for events
• Be fully aware of venue layout and locations of facilities
• Maintaining the look and feel of event, meeting and hospitality spaces

Protocol & Special Events Team Member

Protocol & Special Event volunteers will be at the heart of the focal point for events and venue operational activity for COP26 in Glasgow by supporting the hosting of meetings and events for stakeholders from around the world across several venues in Glasgow.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Manage the Welcome Desk, providing support and guidance to attendees
• Maintaining the look and feel of event, meeting and hospitality spaces
• Providing administration support to the Event Operations team (such as preparing guest lists and packing and distribution of VIP gifts at Venues)

Transport Hub Team Member – Airports or Train Stations

Transport Hub volunteers will provide the warm welcome for delegates upon arrival at airports and train stations, ensuring that their experience of COP26 is of the highest standard.  

Key responsibilities will include:

• Providing a warm welcome to delegates when arriving at airports and train stations
• Giving information on schedules, transport arrangements and local amenities at airports and train stations
• Handling queries related to travel and accommodation

Eligibility

The Host City Volunteer programme aims to be inclusive and diverse and representative of the demographic of Glasgow and Scotland. In order to be a Host City Volunteer, applicants must:

• Be aged 16 years or older on 27 October 2021
• Be able to confidently communicate in English (although English does not need to be the first language) or British Sign Language
• Be available to complete around 6 shifts between 28 October and 14 November
• To be eligible to volunteer in the UK you must be a UK Citizen, have leave to remain, be seeking asylum, have Pre-Settled/ Settled Status or have a Tier 4 (Student) visa. If none of these apply then you require a Tier 5 (charity) visa.

• Experience of other countries, cultures, and empathy for the needs and behaviour of delegates from around the world
• Clear communication skills, both written and oral
• Leadership skills
• Languages skills in speaking and/or translation 
• Administration/data entry and a keen attention to detail
• Customer service skills
