The UNEP Finance Initiative [UNEP-FI] is seeking a Programme Support Intern to work within the Positive Impact Initiative as part of the UNEP, Division of Economy, the Resources & Markets Branch (UNEP-RMB).

About the Position 

Located within UNEP, Division of Economy, the Resources & Markets Branch (UNEP-RMB) seeks to conserve the environment, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade, and financial policies and practices in accordance with the partnership and integrated policy-making approaches of sustainable development.

The Positive Impact Initiative was launched in October 2015 by a group of banks and investors wishing to focus on the funding gap for sustainable development and the achievement of the SDGs. The initiative is centred on a new, impact-based approach to business smodels, based on a holistic consideration of the three pillars of sustainable development.

Duties and Responsibilities 

The intern will assist with implementing UNEP FI’s work programme related to the Positive Impact Initiative. Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the individual’s background as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Carry out research on impact definitions, indicators and metrics
  • Carry out research on financial sector, corporate and sovereign impact management practices
  • Support the development of the PII’s impact management tools/ guidance materials
  • Assist with day-to-day coordination of communications with the participants of the PII (general liaison, setting up meetings, note-taking)
  • Help maintain PII databases and directories
  • Support the production and dissemination of communication materials (mailings, webinars, ppts, brochures, etc.)
  • Help maintain the PII’s web pages and social media presence
  • Assist with the preparations for meetings and events as relevant
  • Assist with other tasks as relevant.

Duration

  • The internship is for a duration of six (6) months, UNPAID and full-time.
  • Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
  • SPECIAL NOTICE: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
  • The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.”

Eligibility

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Studies in finance, economics, sustainable development and/or international relations/affairs preferred.
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advanced course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
  • Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
