PhD Graduate Research Assistant position in Low-cost Air Quality sensors at State University of New York at Albany [Fall 2021]

The Atmospheric Sciences Research Center and the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the State University of New York at Albany are pleased to announce an opening for a highly-motivated PhD student to focus on low-cost air quality monitoring and modeling in New York City (NYC) as part of a project funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

About the PhD Programme 

The project involves the development of a dense low-cost air-quality sensor monitoring network in NYC to provide continuous real-time measurements of particulate and gaseous pollutants. A custom sensor package will be installed at 39 sites within the NYC metropolitan area.

Duties and Responsibilities 

The successful student will assist with the evaluation of low-cost sensor performance, data analysis and forecast modeling including spatial and temporal patterns, source attribution, and model/data comparisons, present results at scientific conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Depending on their interest and skill set, the graduate student could also participate in field operations. Highly-motivated students with a strong background in environmental engineering, atmospheric sciences, chemistry or other technical fields with an interest in novel approaches to studying air quality are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

  • BS or MS degree in environmental engineering, atmospheric sciences, chemistry or a related discipline,
  • Interest in fieldwork and instrumentation,
  • Experience with low-cost sensor monitoring, data acquisition, data processing, and forecast modeling is beneficial,
  • Willingness to travel
