International Joint Master Sustainable Development

The application for the International Joint Master for Sustainable Development is opened. This Joint Master’s Programme was developed by a consortium which consists of Utrecht University, University of Graz, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice,  Leipzig UniversityBasel University and Hiroshima University. Stellenbosch University and Teri School of Advanced Sciences are associated partners who offer an additional mobility option in the programme.

About the Programme 

Sustainable development is a high priority on the international political and scientific agenda. It is also a cross-border concern as environmental, economic and social issues do not end at the borders of the countries. Thus, in national and international agendas, the idea of sustainable development is gaining traction. In order to resolve the intensively debated subject of sustainable development, the Joint master programme for sustainable development presents an international and interdisciplinary approach. The curriculum incorporates the strengths of eight partner universities from eight countries and three continents, providing high-quality, truly international qualifications.  The cornerstones of the programme are:

  • Four semesters full time (two years, 120 ECTS)
  • Interdisciplinary approach with specialization tracks from natural and social sciences
  • 60 ECTS have to be earned at the chosen entrance university
  • The second semester involves a specialisation track at one of the partner universities (30 ECTS – mandatory mobility)
  • An additional mobility semester is optional
  • Entrance universities are: University of Graz (Austria), Leipzig University (Germany), Utrecht University (Netherlands), Ca’ Foscari University Venice (Italy), Hiroshima University (Japan – only Joint Degree option).
  • Specialization tracks can also be chosen at University of Basel (Switzerland)
  • Joint Degree option with Hiroshima University
  • Additional mobilities are also possible at TERI University (India) and Stellenbosch University (South Africa).

Eligibility

  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent
  • Previous academic performance (GPA or average mark)
  • Prior Experience
  • Letter of motivation
  • Recommendation letters
  • Suitable preparation for natural science tracks might include courses in physics, geology, technical sciences, biology, geography, earth sciences, or chemistry. For the social science tracks, the prospective student might have had courses in human geography, planning, sociology, policy sciences, law, management, or economics.

Language

Because the whole programme is in English, the Selection Committee requires proof of the applicant’s proficiency in English. The applicant must submit a recent (not older than two years at the time of admission) one of the following certificates 

  • IELTS (academic module, minimum required score of 6.5 and not less than 6.0 in the writing section)
  • TOEFL (minimum required score 93, internet-based)
  • Cambridge EFL (English as a Foreign Language) presenting one of the following certificates: Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (minimum 180 points; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (minimum score C1).·        
  • English-native-speaking applicants and those who successfully completed an English-taught bachelor programme do not have to take a test.

Note: Hiroshima University is available as an entrance university, however specific regulations apply. You can also choose Graz or Leipzig University as your entrance university with the Joint Degree option with Hiroshima.
